Waynesburg - Ray Combs, 70, passed away on Thursday, July 15th, 2010 at VA Medical Center Lexington. Ray spent his last days with his brother Dean in Lexington, to whom he was very close as they were both in Vietnam together. Ray was born on Tuesday, January 30th, 1940 in Lincoln County to the late Sherman & Mary Napier Combs. Ray proudly served his county in the Army during the Vietnam Conflict. He was awarded the 3 O/S Bars, Expert (M-14) Good Conduct Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Bronze Star Medal, National Defense Service Metal, Vietnam Service Medal with 5 Bronze Stars, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device. He was a member of the Lexington VFW #68, the American Legion Post #345 in Stanford, and the Disabled American Veterans. He returned to Lexington to work for Southern Ice Company and then as a glazier for Happy the Glass Man & Onan Glass Company. Ray will also be remembered for his love for the Kentucky Wildcats.
Ray leaves behind his daughters Sheila Lilly and her husband Terry of Loves Park, IL, and Deanna Combs of Ky; brothers, Dean Combs and his wife, Johnny of Lexington, Gary Combs and his wife, Vickie of Harrodsburg, Doug Combs and his wife, Jean of Waynesburg, Gene Combs and his wife, Linda of Lexington; sisters, Faye McConnell of Delaware, OH, Linda McKinney and her husband, Donald of Danville, Sharon Singleton and Audrey Combs, both of Stanford, Freda Trent and her husband, Walter of Lancaster and Carolyn Petrey and her husband, Jerry of Crab Orchard; three grandchildren Julie Singh, Julian King & Amy Flaningam; 8 Great-Grandchildren; 2 Step-Great-Grandchildren.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Carlos & Clayton Combs, sisters Francis Smith & Lessa Combs.
Services for Ray will be held at 10 AM, Tuesday, July 20th, 2010 at Barnett & Demrow Funeral Home with Bro. Stan Vickers officiating. Burial will be in Double Springs Cemetery with Military Honors by Caswell Saufley Post #18. Visitation will be from 6-9pm, Monday, July 19th, 2010 at Barnett & Demrow Funeral Home.
Austin Combs, Chris Benard, Rodney Goode, Darrell & Gene Smith, Zack Banks, Lynn & Chris Petrey will serve as pallbearers. VFQ Post #68, American Legion Post #345 & Disabled American Veteran's will serve as the Honorary Pallbearers.
